FAQās ABOUT NEUROPSYCHOLOGICAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING
What does neuropsychological assessment & testing cost?
Will my insurance plan cover any part of neuropsychological/psychological assessment or testing?
Each insurance plan differs in terms of whether neuropsychological/psychological assessment or testing is covered, and to what degree. Many PPO plans cover some portion of neuropsychological/psychological assessment or testing with an in-network provider.
It is your responsibility to be fully aware of your current insurance benefits, including your deductible amounts (for both in and out of network providers), co-insurance or co-pay amounts, at the time of the evaluation.
What is a neuropsychological/psychological assessment?
Neuropsychological/Psychological assessment and testing at Cedar Tree is a process of trying to determine the core components of a personās neuropsychological/psychological or mental health problems, personality, IQ, or some other component. It is also a process that helps identify not just weaknesses of a person, but also their strengths.
What is your process of neuropsychological/psychological assessment & testing like?
At Cedar Tree we use a team approach, believing in the value that many eyes can bring new perspectives to each situation. Our team approach to neuropsychological/psychological assessment and testing includes professionals who initially assess your concerns in an intake performed in office. Matthew Hanlon and his team then determine the individualized battery of tests that will help uncover your unique challenges and strengths. The day or days of testing is scheduled and youāll be assessed by the psychologist and/or psychological associate. Then, a follow up appointment will be scheduled to give you your results and diagnoses.
Why is neuropsychological/psychological assessment or testing needed?
Just as with medical conditions, the cause of a personās struggles is not always immediately clear. When concerns arise at school, at work, or in everyday life, there can be many possible explanations.
For example:
- Is there a learning difference, such as dyslexia or another processing difficulty?
- Is attention or concentration being impacted by ADHD?
- Are memory changes affecting performance or daily functioning?
- Is impulse control creating challenges in relationships, school, or work?
- Are stress, anxiety, depression, or another mood concern contributing to the difficulty?
Comprehensive neuropsychological/psychological testing for ADHD, learning differences, memory concerns, and emotional functioning helps clarify what is truly going on. With a clearer understanding of the underlying factors, a psychologist can provide targeted recommendations and a thoughtful plan to support success at any stage of life.
How long is the evaluation and testing process?
The length of the evaluation depends on several factors, including the referral questions, the individualās age, and their ability to participate in interactive testing.
Typically, the process includes an initial intake meeting (with parents, a partner, or the individual, depending on age and needs), one to two face-to-face testing sessions, and a comprehensive feedback appointment to review results and recommendations.
From start to finish, our goal is to complete the evaluation process within 4ā6 weeks.
Does my loved one need to be referred by another provider or specialist?
No, you are welcome and encouraged to call us directly to discuss your questions/concerns, and schedule an evaluation without a referral. We will have a brief phone consultation to determine if our services are the best fit for your concerns.
Who provides the follow up treatment/therapy if this is recommended based on evaluation findings?
A critical component of the evaluation process is the collaborative discussion of meaningful, practical recommendations to support you or your loved one moving forward.
If psychotherapy or other services are recommended, we provide thoughtfully tailored referrals based on age, goals, and specific needs. Whether that involves school-based supports, workplace accommodations, individual therapy, family counseling, or specialized treatment providers. Our goal is to ensure you leave with clear next steps and trusted resources that are a strong fit for this stage of life.
Is the information gathered in the evaluation confidential, including the results and report?
Yes, absolutely. Any information shared during the evaluation process is kept strictly confidential. Information is only released with written consent, for example, if you would like consultation with a teacher, physician, therapist, employer, or other relevant professional.
A comprehensive written report is provided directly to the adult client or to the parent(s)/legal guardian(s), depending on age. Reports are shared with outside providers only with written authorization.
The only exceptions to confidentiality involve situations required by law and professional ethics, such as suspected child, dependent adult, or elder abuse, or concerns about imminent safety. In those cases, appropriate parties will be notified to ensure protection and support.
