Have you ever felt overwhelmed by a wave of emotion and you’re unsure why? Maybe you experience sudden anger, unexplained sadness, or anxiety that disrupts your daily life. Understanding our emotions can feel like deciphering a complex code, but it’s a valuable skill that can improve your well-being and relationships.

Hi, I’m Camille Hoffman, a Licensed Social Worker at Cedar Tree Counseling, we believe in empowering individuals to take charge of their mental health. In this video, we’ll explore 5 key ways to learn about and understand your own feelings.

First, Notice and Name Your Emotions.

The first step is simply becoming aware of your emotional state throughout the day. Pay attention to physical cues – a pounding heart, sweaty palms, a clenched jaw, or feeling “butterflies” or “knots” in your stomach– as these can be signals of underlying emotions.

Once you identify a feeling, name it! Is it frustration, excitement, or disappointment? Putting a label on your emotions helps you understand them better.

Second, Keep an Emotional Journal.

Journaling is a powerful tool for self-discovery. Take a few minutes each day to write down your feelings, along with the situations that triggered them.

Over time, you’ll start to identify patterns and connections between events and your emotional responses.

Third, Expand Your Emotional Vocabulary.

Most of us have a limited vocabulary for describing emotions. We might simply say “happy” or “sad,” but there’s a whole spectrum of feelings to explore!

Expanding your vocabulary allows for more nuanced understanding. Words like “content,” “elated,” or “dejected” can provide a more accurate picture of your emotional state.

Fourth, Explore Your Emotions Through Creative Expression.

Sometimes, talking about emotions can be difficult. Creative outlets like art, music, or dance can be a great way to express yourself nonverbally.

Pay attention to the emotions that arise while creating, and how your chosen medium reflects your inner world.

And finally, Seek Professional Support.

A therapist can be a valuable guide on your journey of emotional exploration. They can provide a safe space for you to explore difficult emotions and develop healthy coping mechanisms.

Remember, you are not alone! At Cedar Tree Counseling, our licensed therapists are here to support you in understanding and managing your emotions. We offer individual therapy sessions tailored to your unique needs.
