Maybe you’ve noticed that many men find it difficult to ask for help.

From the cliché of not wanting to ask for directions to the potentially disastrous home plumbing project, lots of guys need to do it themselves.

The truth is that men often do consider seeking help to be a sign of weakness, or not being capable of handling their own problems, but research has demonstrated that men are not just biologically wired to not seek help, they have been socialized by a society with a pretty narrow view of what it means to be a man. Surely you’ve heard: “Boys don’t cry”, “Boys are tough”, “Real men suck it up”.

The reality is that these beliefs about men have had some devastating repercussions. Suicide has become the 10th leading cause of death in the U.S. and 8-in-10 of those suicides are by men. Many of whom may not have been able to ask for help.

What men need to know is that it takes real courage and strength to ask for help. Suffering alone does not make you stronger, in fact, long-term, it just wears you down. We are not made for going solo. Human beings, men and women alike, are wired for relationship, connection, and community.

Therapy is one place where men can find the safety they need to begin building the muscles required to understand themselves and relate in healthier ways with those who are most important to them.
